A cosy bedroom update with Eve Mattress
This is a collaborative blog post with Eve Sleep, and includes gifted items.
I am slowly writing about each room in my home, which we moved into last December. You can see my study/studio in this post here, and today I’m showing you our bedroom. The colder weather always makes me want to nest and cosy up, and especially to focus on the bedroom, ready for winter. This room has a working fireplace in it (I know) so it has become our favourite room to relax in in the evenings.
This room was used as study when we moved in, so we first had to remove some wall mounted bookshelves, then fill, sand and repaint the walls. We stalled there for about 6 months. Auden’s cot was in here until a few months ago too, so when he moved into Frankie-Rose’s room, it spurred us on to finish the room. Our home is rented so we weren’t making huge changes, rather finishing off, making good and dressing it as beautifully as possible.
The brief:
Considered items
When i’m finishing rooms in my home I consider any new items really carefully. I use what I already have as much as possible, swapping things around or altering, and I do a lot of research about any new items. There isn’t a lot that is new in this space, rather I have brought together things I already had, or swapped things from other rooms, mixed with a few key new pieces. It’s my favourite way to update a space.
Calm and cosy
The look I was aiming for in the bedroom (and the new house generally) is clear and calm yet textured, cosy and with subtle colour colour and pattern. I also wanted to add some plants to the space too. You can see my mood board here, on Pinterest.
Comfort
I prioritised sorting our bedroom out before other rooms in the house because it’s so important to me to have a cosy space to relax in. Everything has been chosen for comfort or calm, not least the mattress which is perhaps the most important element in the space. We chose an Eve Sleep mattress and absolutely love it. It’s quite firm, and perfect if you are a front or back sleeper because it really supports your back. The old mattress is still in use, It’s now stored under the bed for when guests stay. Dave and I have been choosing to read, or watch telly in here rather than in our lounge downstairs because it feels so luxurious! The bed is so comfortable, we can light the fire and candles and it is so cosy.
We set the room up and styled and dressed the space with the kids a couple of weekends ago which was a bit… interesting, and not all that productive, but we got some of my favourite photos ever in the process! In the one of Auden and I top left, below, the mattress is actually upside down. Ha. I rectified this a little later when we realised! I was able to get the mattress on the bed by myself, and flip it when I put it down wrong (!) it wasn’t tooo heavy.
Then it was on to decluttering, attaching the light fittings, and styling the space, in nap times, evenings and occasionally with the kids in tow. Here’s how that went...!
Here’s what we have done in this room.
We cleared out anything we didn’t need anymore, or anything beyond repair. I cleared out old clothes and toiletries and put them in baskets to keep them organised.
We put up a black out blind and some White linen curtains from our old house.
The bed is a hand me down which we repainted grey.
We put up our new bedside lights. In old house we used some angle poise lamps as bedside lamps, but here we love them in the study. I fell in love with a pair of wall mounted swinging lights I saw in an interiors magazine 10 years ago and have been obsessing over finding similar ones for months. These ones from Curious Egg are similar and look so architectural on the wall. There’s almost no need for art because the lines of the wall lamps are so striking. I’m so happy with them! I need to get softer bulbs in them- that’s next on my list.
Added new bedlinen. The striped bedlinen, 2 square khaki pillows and small orange pillow is from a new linen brand called Deco collective. I love that you can mix and match and after agonising about the different combinations, I love the classic stripe with the khaki and orange, so much!
I put our large cheese plant in this room from the hallway downstairs.
The bedside tables are apple crates we have had for years and years.
I styled the shelves. The shelves in the bedroom were here when we moved in but had become a dumping ground. After clearing and organising them, they now store handbags and baskets with toiletries in them. I have also added some art and plants too.
Updating a bedroom - some tips
It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money or involve too much work. See if you could repaint, upcycle or fix anything before you buy new.
Start with clearing things out first. Recycle, donate or discard anything which no longer serves it’s purpose. Be brutal. Use boxes or baskets to keep things organised.
See if there’s anything in your home you can swap around (ie plants, candles, art or blankets from other areas of your home).
Prioritise how things feel; this is absolutely paramount in a bedroom. Go for lots of cosy soft textures and make sure you have a good mattress that is right for your back, and really good pillows too.
Make the bed. I make my bed as soon as I get out of it; sometimes one handed whilst holding a child! But it makes all the difference to how inviting and cosy the bedroom is. I know some people love a messy bed! Make the bed in whatever way makes it most inviting to you.
Keep a tidy bedside table. Even if the rest of the room is messy, if you have a bedside table with a little bunch of flowers and a candle, (or a photo, little basket of lotions and potions, essential oil burner etc etc) it means you wake up to, and go to sleep looking at, a beautiful calm surface.
Add candles and low lighting. Both make all the difference in creating a cosy space.
